Serving Whitman County since 1877
Multiple events planned to celebrate Independence Day
COLFAX — Independence Day is approaching this Tuesday, July 4, the day the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and Whitman County is not holding out on fireworks and celebrations to commemorate the historic holiday.
Endicott
Endicott will celebrate the nation’s freedom at the Baseball fields by the school Tuesday, July 4.
At 5 p.m., attendees can enjoy burgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, chips, and pop.
A pie shack will also be available from 5 to 7 p.m., with a kiddie parade starting at 6 p.m.
The band Hurricane Surfers will play from 6 to 9 p.m.
Community member, Anne Lowe, has been helping to get the community involved in the annual event.
Lowe said the band would play the National Anthem before the fireworks show.
“They played down at Boyer about a month ago,” she said, adding that they look forward to having them play for the Endicott Fourth of July event.
At 7 p.m., an ice cream social and a parade with a lineup at the Endicott Gun Club and School Road will occur.
The fireworks show starts at 10 p.m. with a possible open swim after the fireworks until midnight.
Lowe stated that she hopes the younger generation will start helping out and getting into keeping these events happening in the community.
Pullman
The Pullman Chamber of Commerce and the City of Pullman are hosting their annual Fourth of July celebration at Sunnyside Park, 147 Southwest Cedar Street, with music and festivities beginning at 5 p.m.
Timber at the Lumberyard will join in celebrating, selling hamburgers and hot dogs and the traditional sales of cotton candy and Coca-Cola soft drinks. An ATM will be available onsite this year.
The celebration will kick off with the Community Band of the Palouse performing from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Legendary folk singer Dan Maher will follow the band, and the night will close with DJ Goldfinger, who will play music through the decades.
Pullman Radio Stations will choreograph the fireworks show with music, and it will play on Hit Radio 104.7 and New Country 104.3.
Families are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets and utilize Pullman Public Transit buses offering free rides to and from Sunnyside Park from designated Park and Ride locations.
Alcohol will not be allowed in the park, and the Pullman Chamber and Whitman County Humane Society strongly discourage pets due to the fireworks and amount of people.
Boyer Park
Meanwhile, Boyer Park and Marina, 1753 Granite Road, will celebrate the nation’s freedom on Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m.
There will be music with Marcos Dominguez and the Midnight Highway and a fireworks show presented by Rocketman Pyros until the sun goes down.
Washtucna
Washtucna’s annual Independence Day celebration is set to begin at 11 a.m. in Bassett Park.
At that time, a parade is set to march in patriotic fashion.
According to spokeswoman Lora Hille, that’s just the start of the local fun.
After the parade, there will be a flag ceremony presented by Boy Scout Troop No. 888.
And the Washtucna School Band is planning a potluck barbecue, as well as children’s games, she said.
Parade entries are still welcome, she said, noting anyone wishing to join in can email her at lorahille@yahoo.com.
Whether you’re watching the parade or just enjoying Americana in full bloom, Hille suggests bringing a lawn chair.
