Fundraiser proposal may bring dogs to pool
PALOUSE — The Palouse City Council hosted a regular meeting on Tuesday, June 27, to discuss several projects ongoing in town this July.
Superintendent Mike Wolf reported several issues with the pool, starting with its closure from Tuesday, June 20, to Saturday, June 24, due to a drain pipe problem.
With the closure, the pool was set back a bit as employees began brainstorming fundraiser ideas for the pool.
Kayla Johnson proposed hosting a dog day at the very end of the pool season. She explained in the meeting that other pools have done this.
She suggested that one person per dog should be allowed. Wolf had no objections; however, before plans move forward, Palouse City Council must check with insurance companies for clearance on the event.
A consensus from the council allowed the proposal to move forward with plans.
A significant leak was identified at the end of June. Shoemaker Construction responded to the call and repaired the pool as a permanent fix.
The 6’ drain pipe from the pit to the valve did not hold, however, and was a temporary fix, reports say.
The sewage system also needed some attention at the pool. Reports say that lifeguards assisted with cleanup around the pool, including pulling weeds, trimming bushes, and string trimming.
The pool reopened Sunday, June 21, until a pool light went out, and the pool was promptly drained.
Maintenance went on until 11 p.m. that Sunday, and was able to get the pool running by Monday.
The pool was originally built in 1965 and, as a result, faces several problems due to outdated equipment.
Palouse City Pool is now open again at regular operational hours.
