Judith L. Bowersox

We had to let our cherished sister, aunt, and dear friend go on June 2. Judy fought like the tough "Alaskan" she was, but the injuries were too severe. Judy's family would like to thank the entire staff at Sacred Heart's ICU for their care and limitless compassion.

Judy was born on March 18, 1939, in Farmington, Washington, to Harry and Esther Gumm. She was the fifth of six children, four girls, and two boys. Life on the farm was certainly challenging at times but a whole lot of fun for six kids as well. Playing in the barn was a favorite, not just because of the tools and tack, but because it was "supposed" to be off limits. Judy attended school in Farmington and graduated from Oakesdale High School in 1957.

Judy left the farm shortly after graduating and went to technical school in Spokane and quickly got a job at Armor Meats. She met her beloved husband, Darrell, and they were married on Judy's birthday, in 1961.

Judy and Darrell packed up a truck and little trailer and headed to Anchorage, Alaska in 1963. Judy worked for the school district and Darrell worked on the North Slope, two weeks on and two weeks off. They made a crazy decision, well crazy to Judy, and bought a large parcel of land in Talkeetna, Alaska, at the base of Denali. They spent many a weekend there, building a small cabin, hunting, fishing, and getting to know the wonderful people of that area. They shared those weekends with the ocean where they spent time on their boat catching crabs and enjoying the gorgeous scenery. We were all treated to amazing adventures when visiting them.

After retiring, Judy and Darrell moved permanently to Talkeetna where they had, by that time, built a log house, with beautiful flowers and gardens. Judy loved to garden in her greenhouses. She canned and preserved everything and was always quick to share her bounty. Retirement didn't last long and they opened Sunshine Auto Parts on their property. Judy was an integral part of the business which thrived due to the amazing town, and Judy's treats helped too.

After "real" retirement Judy and Darrell moved to Post Falls, Idaho, to be closer to family. Judy never met a stranger so shortly after their move she knew the neighbors all around her and even found a few fellow Alaskans.

After Darrell's death, Judy moved to Royal Park Retirement Community. Judy always said she was so happy she made that move. She loved living there. She made so many friends with neighbors and staff. She loved not having to cook or clean and just enjoy the events and especially BINGO!!!! Our family would also like to thank them all for their support and help during this very difficult time.

Judy was very involved in the community, especially the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Christmas was Judy's time to shine with all her buffets, candies, decorations, and infectious energy. Everyone benefited from her generosity, from hats, gloves, and school supplies to the kids in Talkeetna and Post Falls, to an occasional family member in need, or just a want.

Judy leaves behind a grieving family including sisters, a brother, and many nieces and nephews (including greats and great-greats). We can't imagine life without her, but we know in the tough, kind, generous, funny, caring, enthusiastic, and compassionate spirit of Judy, we will get through it.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Kootenai Humane Society or a charity of your choice.

Services are to be held at the Fairmont Memorial Park Chapel, 5200 W. Wellesley Avenue on Saturday, July 29th at 2 pm.
