Washington State University receives grants to aid students

PULLMAN — Washington State University’s Office of the Dean of Students has been awarded two grants totaling $680,000 to assist students facing housing and food insecurity.

These grants, funded by the Washington State legislature and coordinated by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC), aim to provide support to eligible students starting this fall.

The first grant, Senate Bill 5702, expands the Students Experiencing Homelessness and Foster Youth Pilot Program, now providing housing support funding for all public colleges and universities in the state.

According to Heather Case, assistant dean of students, the grant’s initial pilot program was a resounding success.

“The impact of the pilot grant was significant, as many students were on the verge of being evicted,” Case said. “Students have said the grant funds are life changing and kept them on the path to degree completion.”

WSU received $204,000 to help undergraduate and graduate students cover their housing costs.

The second grant, House Bill 1559, establishes a pilot program to aid students experiencing food insecurity.

WSU will receive $480,000 over two years, with a commitment for additional third-year funding.

This program will support first-year, Pell-eligible, or WASFA students living in residence halls, offering up to $500 in dining dollars each semester.

Recipients must participate in workshops on nutrition and budgeting to receive the funds.
