Serving Whitman County since 1877
Oct. 30, 1941 - July 26, 2023
Carol Ann (Ratliffe) Henning, 81, a longtime resident of Colfax and Onecho area, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the Whitman Health & Rehab Center in Colfax, Wash. At her request, she was cremated so her ashes can be scattered in some of her favorite locations.
Carol was born on October 30, 1941, to Bill and Mary (Litzenberger) Ratliffe in Colfax. She and her sister Marilyn (Ratliffe) Zehner grew up in Steptoe, Washington, where they attended school and graduated from Colfax high school.
Carol met Vern Henning while working as a secretary and they were married on October 19, 1961, and she resided at their farm on Almota Road in Colfax. She did some light bookkeeping from time to time and worked as a bank teller at Seattle First in Colfax for a time, but she was mostly remembered as a wife, loving mother and excellent homemaker.
Carol was a talented pianist and had a beautiful singing voice. She played for different church functions and even learned to play the organ. She was an amazing seamstress, from clothing to craft projects and later in her years she was an excellent quilter. She participated in 4H judging for sewing contests which made her a very meticulous teacher and she was well known for ripping out what was thought of as "a really good seam", to start over and try again.
Visitors and guests could always expect a warm welcome and a delicious meal when stopping in. Carol was a wonderful cook and enjoyed keeping German traditions alive such as homemade sauerkraut or seispleena and sauerkraut soup.
Carol is survived by her son Russell Henning and daughter Becky Henning both of Colfax, Washington, grandson Russell (Kayla)Freier, and great-grandsons Brayson and Emmett. She was preceded in death by her husband, sister, and parents. On-line guest book is at http://www.corbeillfuneralhomes.com
