Colfax girls basketball piece together two key wins

Back on track for season with two wins

COLFAX - The Colfax Bulldogs girls basketball team brought their season record back to .500 after defeating two schools back-to-back during the third week of winter sports action.

The Bulldogs started their week on Friday, Dec. 15, with a blowout victory over the Asotin Panthers at home. The Bulldogs followed up their Friday game with a road victory on Saturday, Dec. 16, against the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos.

The game against the Panthers saw Colfax control the tempo and flow of the game from start-to-finish, they scored 24 points in the first quarter while allowing just two to help earn the 61-16 victory.

The first quarter was the Brynn McGaughy and Hailey Demler show. McGaughy and Demler both scored 12 points in the quarter as they were the only two scorers for Colfax in the first.

The defense of Colfax held the Panthers to two points in the first quarter and just five points in the second quarter. The Panthers had seven points at halftime.

Colfax scored 12 points in the second quarter, but Lauryn York was the star of the quarter. She had two points, but had four rebounds, three assists and a steal in the quarter to show off her excellent point guard play.

The Bulldogs started the third quarter with a 29-point lead. They quickly led 49-16 before the quarter ended.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs would score 12 points, with the defense holding the Panthers to zero points, ending the game with a 45-point victory for Colfax.

"Every kid gave us good minutes, we found a way to score against their zone, and played team defense on the other end," said Colfax head coach Jordan Holmes.

The Bulldogs had a decisive team victory, with 10 players scoring at least one point in the game.

Demler led the way with 20 points. She also had six rebounds and five steals in the game.

McGaughy finished with 17 points and five rebounds. She also had three steals and two assists.

Ava Swan had eight points off the bench for Colfax to go along with six rebounds, four steals and an assist.

The Bulldogs had a quick turnaround, with a Saturday, Dec. 16, game in Ritzville against the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague/Washtucna Broncos.

The Bulldogs would see the game become close throughout, but the Colfax girls pulled away in the second half, taking the 57-40 victory.

The Broncos scored 10 points in the first quarter thanks to seven from Zoe Galbreath. McGaughy would answer with six points of her own to go along with four rebounds and two blocks in the quarter as the Bulldogs took a 12-10 lead heading into the second quarter.

Colfax would score 18 points in the second quarter thanks to seven points from Demler. The Broncos scored 12, 10 of which were Galbreath's, and the Bulldogs led 30-22 heading into the third quarter.

The Bulldogs had a great halftime meeting, and buckled down on Galbreath in the third quarter, holding her to just two points as the Broncos scored seven points in the quarter.

Colfax scored 12 in the quarter to take a 42-29 lead with eight minutes to play.

In the fourth, the Bulldogs would out score the Broncos 15-11 in the fourth to earn the victory.

In the game, McGaughy would finish with another double-double. She had 14 points and 11 rebounds. She also blocked four shots in the game.

Brenna Gilchrist had an excellent game as well for Colfax. She finished with 11 points on 5/11 shooting and grabbed six rebounds for Colfax.

Ashley Ring would add seven points and an assist to the total for the Bulldogs in the game as well.

The next game for the Bulldogs was Tuesday, Dec. 19, after press time, against Liberty (Spangle).

Following their Liberty game, the girls will play again on Thursday, Dec. 21. The Bulldogs will travel to Lakeside to take on Lakeside (9 mile). The game is set to start at 5:45 p.m.

The Bulldogs will then play two games at West Valley high school in a tournament. They will play Wednesday, Dec. 27, against Timberlake, and Thursday, Dec. 28, against University High School.
