Plymouth Church plans Costa Rica mission

COLFAX — Colfax Plymouth Church pastor Michael Birnbaum is leading another mission trip this year to Costa Rica, Feb. 24 through Mar. 3.

Those who take part will have the opportunity for several optional service activities such as helping in local mission projects, education in schools and community projects like construction repairing homes..

Birnbaum said that retired teachers might be interested in the trip for the chance to help with ESL tutoring, and take part in after school outreach. “We do medical work, medical professionals are welcome,” he said.

“We’ve had some generous donors who can’t go, but want to help that have given financial help,” Birnbaum said, noting that the donors have made funds available to those who can go. “They can contact me for that if they need help going financially,” he said.

Birnbaum said that the trip is a combination of service and fun, and that they will be doing some tour stuff as well. “In the mornings we’ll do service, and in the afternoons tour,” he said.

Birnbaum has been leading rotary, church, and university trips for 30 years, and Costa Rica was were he started.

“All the places we go I know everyone,” Birnbaum said, noting that he’ll be leading the trip myself.

“It’s an opportunity to combine some genuine service with enjoying Costa Rica,” he added.

Other ways that those who attend can help is if they have room in their luggage Birnbaum said that they need pressure scopes, stethoscopes and children’s chewable vitamins. “Those are the three things people can bring or donate to the church and we’ll take them,” he said.

Birnbauem said the nine day trip costs $1485, with a $200 deposit plus air fair, is co-sponsored by the Plymouth Church and the Rotary Club of Colfax.

Birnbaum said that this year there are no immunizations required. The trip will fly into San Jose Costa Rica, and the stay will be at a Costa Rican hotel.
