Both teams beat Dayton, and the boys beat Colton
PALOUSE — The Garfield-Palouse girls basketball team split their district games this week, bringing their overall record to 6-5 on the season.
The Vikings took on the Dayton Bulldogs Friday, Jan. 5. The game was played in Palouse.
Garfield-Palouse would win the game 54-33 with team defensive efforts.
The Vikings led 13-2 in the first quarter before the Bulldogs called a timeout.
After the timeout, the Vikings went on a 7-5 run to lead by 13 after one.
The second quarter saw the Bulldogs score just six points in the quarter, giving up 13 to the Vikings, who went into the locker room ahead 33-13.
Elena Flansburg had seven total points in the first half, five of them coming in the first quarter. Kyra Brantner also had seven points in the first half, with five coming in the first.
Morgan Lentz scored three points in the first half as well.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Vikings went on a 7-2 run before Dayton called a timeout. The quarter would end with the Vikings ahead 44-17.
Garfield-Palouse were outscored 10-16 in the fourth, but held on for the 21-point victory.
Flansburg and Brantner both finished with 12 points each in the game for the Vikings. Zoe Laughary added six, and Lentz and HettyLee Laughary had five.
The next game for the Wildcats was played on Saturday, Jan. 6, against Whitman County opponent Colton. The game was played in Colton.
The two teams battled hard throughout, with the Wildcats emerging victorious in the end, securing the 46-38 victory over the Vikings.
The next time the Vikings take the floor will be Saturday, Jan. 13, when Garfield-Palouse take on Tekoa-Rosalia. The game will be played in Tekoa, and will tip-off at 4 p.m.
The Garfield-Palouse Viking boys took down both of their opponents during the week to improve their record to 8-3 on the season.
With the two wins, the Vikings have won their last five games, and six-of-seven.
The Vikings started with a decisive 59-25 victory over the Dayton Bulldogs. The game was played in Palouse.
The Vikings started with a 13-9 lead before ending the quarter strong, leading 17-9.
The Vikings would come out quick in the second quarter, scoring five in a row before quick timeouts from the Bulldogs.
Dayton took another timeout down by 21 before trailing by 22 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Vikings put the game away early, scoring nine unanswered points to force a timeout from Dayton. The quarter ended with just two points for Dayton, and a 38-point lead for the Vikings.
The Vikings were outscored 9-7 in the fourth quarter, but built a comfortable lead in the first three quarters to take the 59-23 victory.
Landon Orr finished with 16 points in the game, 14 of those coming in the first half.
Lane Collier had 11 total points, and Kiernan SNekvik had seven.
10 Vikings scored at least two points in the victory.
The next game for the Vikings was played on Saturday, Jan. 6, when the Vikings took on the Colton Wildcats. The game was played in Colton.
Garfield-Palouse shot 41% in the game to earn the 63-30 victory over the Wildcats.
Collier led the way with 15 points, and Orr finished with nine.
The next game for the Vikings will be played Friday, Jan. 12, when the Vikings take on the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse Eagles. The game will be in Palouse, and will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
