Joseph J. Schauble

SCHAUBLE, Joseph J., 89, a beloved husband, father, friend and coach passed peacefully in his sleep at his home on February 7, 2024.

Joe was born June 14, 1934, in Killdeer, N.D. He was the youngest of nine children born to Robert and Mary Schauble. The family moved in 1937 from their farm in Killdeer, N.D., to St. John, Wash., where his father Robert worked as millwright and mother, Mary, a homemaker. A graduate of the St. John Class of 1952, Joe went to Gonzaga on a partial basketball scholarship and also played four years of baseball playing primarily at first base and in the outfield.

Joe and his older brothers Bill ('51) and Rollin ('52) hold the distinction of being the only set of three brothers to play basketball for the Zags. Joe earned a master's degree in school administration, but preferred being in the classroom teaching math and coaching. He loved sports and transitioned from being a player to a coach. During a varied career that spanned 43 years, Joe coached five different sports from elementary school through college, junior varsity and varsity, in parochial and public schools. He retired in 1996 after teaching for 38 years, the last 30 at North Central High School. Over the years Joe coached football, basketball, baseball before becoming the head track coach at North Central for 23 seasons.

Joe met the love of his life Carolyn Magee, at Gonzaga University. They were married on December 26, 1959, and recently celebrated their 64th anniversary. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; his four children, Dan (Kalina), Carla, Joanne (Jeff) St. Yves and Mike (Jill); his nine grandchildren, Roland, Desirae, Cole, Nathan, Luke, Jake, Beth, Katie, and Mark; and his four great-grandchildren, Kaya, Izayah, Dakota, and Ashlin; sisters-in-law, Colleen (Bill), Maureen (Phil), Marge (Rollin); and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marianne (Magee) and Dick Dunn; and forty-three nieces and nephews.

In addition to teaching, coaching and raising a family, Joe served in the Army Reserves for over twenty years.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary Schauble; sister Elizabeth DeLong (Ray); brothers, John (Dorothy), Milton (Catherine), Don, Bill, Phil, Rollin, Al (Betty); son Mark and niece Pam.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m., at Assumption Parish Catholic Church, 3618 W Indian Trail Rd (Spokane, WA) Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m., and a reception will follow the Mass in the Assumption Gymnasium.
