Four Bulldog wrestlers qualify for State Tournament

Competing in Tacoma starting Friday, Feb. 16

COLFAX - At the conclusion of the 2B regionals wrestling tournament, held in Spangle on Saturday, Feb. 10, four wrestlers from Colfax High School qualified for the state competition.

At 106 pounds, Ty Scott qualified for state.

At 126 pounds, Cooper Phillips qualified for state.

At 132 pounds, Dillon Gassenberg qualified for state.

At 144 pounds, Alton Burt qualified for state.

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17, in Tacoma.

Colfax finished the regionals meet in eighth place out of 19 teams with 78 team points. Jenkins (Chewelah) took first overall in the meet with 146.5 team points.

Scott would place third for Colfax in the 106 pound division, scoring 16 team points.

He started the meet with a win by fall in 2:42 against Timothy Phillips of Republic-Curlew.

Scott would fall in his next round in 1:26 to Joey Matusik of Reardan.

Next for Scott was the consolation semifinal round, where he would win by fall in :36 to Chance Degon of Liberty (Spangle).

During the third-place match, Scott would win by decision over Phillips, advancing Scott to state, 8-4.

Cody Phillips scored five team points for Colfax with his fifth-place finish in the 120 pound division.

After losing his opening round match by fall in 1:59 to Jack Molitor of Almira-Coulee-Hartline, Cody would receive a bye.

Cody would then lose his next match, this time by decision against Alex Matusik of Reardan, 14-8.

In the fifth-place match, Cody would receive a bye, claiming fifth overall.

Cooper Phillips dominated his regional matches, taking first overall in the 126 pound division, scoring 24 team points for Colfax.

After receiving a bye in his opening round match, Cooper would win his semifinal round by fall in 2:31 against Jaxson Chantry of Selkirk.

During the championship match, Cooper took first with a victory by fall in 3:24 against Sam Drake of Kettle Falls, advancing him to state.

Gassenberg took third overall for the 132 pound division, scoring 13 team points for Colfax.

He would lose his opening round match by fall in :46 to Tristan Hall of Republic-Curlew.

After receiving a bye in the consolation round one, Gassenberg would win by fall in 1:40 to Alexander Bonner of Lind-Ritzville.

Hall and Gassenberg met again in the third-place match, with Gassenberg coming away with the victory yet again. This time, Gassenberg would win by sudden victory, 7-5.

Burt qualified for state with a fourth-place finish in the 132 pound division, scoring 13 team points for Colfax along the way.

Burt started with a quarterfinal loss by decision to Titan Tapia of Jenkins (Chewelah), 11-4.

The first win for Burt in the meet came in his next match, where he would win by fall in 2:24 against Wyatt Stout of Almira-Coulee-Hartline.

Burt would win his consolation semifinal round match by fall in 2:55 against Justin Bumgardener of Republic-Curlew.

After the victory, Burt advanced to the third/fourth place match, where he lost by fall in 4:15 to Tapia. He would still qualify for the state meet, however.

At 157 pounds, Joel Burris would lose his opening round match by fall in :39 to Deacon Medeiros of Kettle Falls. Burris would then lose the consolation round match by fall in :47 to Peyton Bailey of Jenkins (Chewelah).

Tristen Burd would finish fifth in the 285 pound division for Colfax, just missing out on a state tournament berth, but scored seven team points for Colfax.

Burd lost his opening match by fall in 1:57 to Bryson Sobosky of Jenkins (Chewelah).

He would then receive a bye before losing by fall in 1:35 to Justin Boyea of Asotin.

The only win on the day for Burd came in the fifth-place match, where he would win by fall in 1:09 against Malachi Lewis of Asotin.

Grace Jones wrestled for the Colfax girls team in the 115 pounds division on Saturday, Feb. 10, in Quincy.

Jones would place sixth overall in the meet, scoring four team points for Colfax, however, she would just miss out on a state tournament berth.

Jones started her meet with a loss by fall in :34 to Alondra Cordova of Quincy.

After the loss, Jones won by decision against Karlyn Kocher of Cascade (Leavenworth), 1-0.

During the consolation semifinal round, Jones lost by fall in 1:55 to Lahalee Michel of Omak.

With the loss, Jones moved to the fifth/sixth-place match, where Jones lost again by fall in 1:55 to Eva Robeck of Okanogan.

Other local girl wrestlers were Alexis Taylor.

Taylor wrestled for Liberty in the 155 pound division, placing sixth overall.

Her meet started with a loss by fall in 2:27 to Jurney Cate of Omak.

After the loss, Taylor would win by fall in 2:43 against Ayamae Duclos of lake Roosevelt.

Taylor lost by fall in 2:08 to Bobbyjo Dick, then would lose the fifth/sixth-place match by decision against Jada Woods of Republic-Curlew, 7-2.

The state tournament for the Colfax boys will be Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17 at the Tacoma Dome.
