Eagles lose two to Pirates

ST. JOHN — After splitting two games against Walla Walla to open the season, the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse Eagles baseball team took on the Pomeroy Pirates for a double-header.

The games were played in Pomeroy, both on Friday, March 22.

On the day, the Eagles were shut out 15-0 in the first game, then lost the second game 2-16.

Matthew DeFord got the starting nod in game one for the Eagles. He pitched two innings, allowing 15 runs on 13 hits and three walks. He would strike out five batters in the game.

The game was called after three innings of play, and the Eagles were held without a hit in the game.

Daniel McGuire was the only base runner for the Eagles in the game as he earned a walk.

After the shut-out loss, the Eagles took on the Pirates again. This time, St. John would score two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, however, the Pirates answered with five runs, then three in the second and seven in the third to dominate the game, winning 16-2 after four innings.

Creighton Kauffman started the game on the mound for the Eagles. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowing 13 runs on eight hits and three walks with five strike outs.

Zane Webb came in for the final inning and a third for St. John. He allowed three runs on seven hits and one strike out.

The Eagles scored their two first inning runs on one hit with three errors. McGuire had the two RBIs after his lone hit in the game.

The next game for the Eagles will be played Tuesday, Apr. 9, a double-header against Touchet. The games will be played at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 9, in Touchet.
