Vikings baseball shut-out in first three games of season

PALOUSE — The Garfield-Palouse Vikings baseball team started their season with three-straight losses.

In the three games, the Vikings failed to score any runs, while allowing at-least 10 in all three games.

The Vikings opened their season on Thursday, March 21, against Kendrick. The game was played in Kendrick, and saw the Vikings register just two hits in the game, while Kendrick scored 10 runs on 10 hits. The game was called in the fourth inning of play.

Colton Pfaff pitched three innings for the Vikings. He allowed 10 runs on eight hits with four walks. He would strike out one batter.

Walker Montgomery came in to replace Pfaff in the fourth and final inning. He allowed no runs on two hits and three walks.

Offensively, Preston Olson and Cason Sperber were the only Viking batters to register a hit in the game.

Defensively, the Vikings had zero fielding errors in the game.

Garfield-Palouse took to the field for their second and third games on Monday, March 25, against the Troy Trojans. The games were played in Troy, where the Trojans shut out the Vikings in both games, winning 10-0, and 11-0, respectfully.

The first game of the double-header saw Maxwell Mitzimberg pitch the first three innings for the Vikings. He allowed five runs on five hits with two walks. Mitzimberg struck out two batters on the day.

Rowan Edwards came in to replace Mitzimberg, pitching one and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on five hits with a walk. He also struck out two batters.

Offensively, the Vikings recorded two hits again, this time from Edwards and Cooper Parzuchowski.

Again, the Vikings recorded zero defensive errors in the game.

Garfield-Palouse took on Troy again in their second game of the double-header. This time, Troy took down the Vikings 11-0 in five innings of action.

Montgomery got the starting job in the game, however, he lasted just one inning as he allowed eight runs on two hits and eight walks. Montgomery would strike out one batter.

Pfaff replaced Montgomery in the second inning. He would pitch two and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on one hit and six walks, however, he would strike out an impressive seven batters.

The Vikings had three hits in the game, one each from Olson, Edwards, and Riley Pfaff. Riley also pitched a third of an inning for the Vikings, replacing Colton. He allowed one hit before recording an out.

The next game for the Vikings will be Thursday, March 28, against the Asotin Panthers junior varsity team. The game will be played at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, in Asotin.

The Vikings and Panthers did not meet during the 2022-23 baseball season, this will be the first match up this season between the schools.
