Genealogical Society presentation

PULLMAN— The Whitman County Genealogical Society is hosting a free Spring Mini-Seminar from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 27.

The event will take place at Bishop Place Independent Living Social Room, located at 811 Southeast Klemgard Street in Pullman, and will feature several speakers including Kathy Buchholtz, Alex Otero and Jill Nock.

Buchholtz is Program Manager for Whitman County Library’s Whitman Heritage Digital Collections.

Accompanying Buchholtz for her presentation will be Archivist for Whitman County Historical Society Alex Ortero.

Ortero said that Buchholtz has worked diligently on her presentation to instruct people how to find information in the digital collections.

Buchholtz and Ortero will share information about how the digital collection came about, how it is funded, and how to use it.

“The particular is she is trying to make them feel comfortable with it,” Ortero said, “I’m just going to give her support where I can.”

The digital collection has over 5,000 historical images from across Whitman County. Funds supporting the collection come from a grant provided by the federal institute of Museum and Library Services, which is administered by the Library Services Technology Act through the Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

The presentation will include a slide presentation with photographs from Whitman County and a demonstration on how to access and navigate the collection. A time for questions will follow.

Ortero said that there will not be scanning at the event, but there will be forms for those interested in making an appointment to get scanning of their historical pictures done.

Whitman County Genealogical Society member Jill Nock will also give a presentation titled “Okay, I have my DNA Results: Now what?”

Nock has been a member of the Genealogical Society since 2016, attained a credential in the U.S. Upper South Region through the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists, and owns the business Mountain State Genealogy.

The focus of Nock’s presentation is to help answer the question of what to do with one’s DNA test results. Nock will talk through the steps and give information for tools to help listeners on their DNA journey.

A time for questions will follow Nock’s presentation.
