Tekoa fills empty city council seat

Ausmus appointed to open seat

TEKOA — The open city council seat for position five closed on Monday, May 20, after a local woman was appointed.

Shelly Ausmus, of Tekoa, was appointed after submitting an application and answering three questions for the board.

The seat was opened after B.J. Sperber submitted his letter of resignation for unspecified reasons.

Ausmus was voted 4-2 against Brad Chandler of Tekoa. She previously applied and ran against Roy Shulz for the mayoral election, but lost.

One other candidate, Stephanie Apple-Clark of Dusty, also applied but received zero votes from the council.

Ausmus previously held a city council seat for two and a half years before running for mayor and stated she hoped to continue the work she started in the past.

“Tekoa is a place full of great people, and there are a couple of things important to Tekoa. We need a vision moving forward,” she said. “I want to be involved with how the city navigates this in the future.”

Ausmus stated that completing the ordinances they discussed during her term was just one of a few priorities on her list of things she hopes to accomplish throughout her term.

“I would like to be a part of the plan that helps formulate where we are going to be in 5-10 years,” she said.
