U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spark wildfire

COLTON — On Monday, May 13, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ranger’s failed attempt to safely discard hot coals sparked a small wildfire on the Snake River bank.

Whitman County Fire District 14 Volunteer Firefighters from Colton and Uniontown were called to a small blaze between Wawawai Landing and Granite Point.

Volunteers quickly extinguished the fire that burned brush along the waterline.

District 14 officials say the rangers called in the fire.

Reports say the federal workers were cleaning out the fire pits along the river when they accidentally started the fire, while trying to toss hot coals into the water.

The annual campfire ban on corps ground along the river starts Monday, June 10. Whitman County Fire District 12 Volunteers out of Pullman were called to assist.
