Schools compete at track state championship

Vikings Scored 79 team points to win by 14 total points

Palouse - Another state champion in Whitman County was crowned Saturday, May 25, in Yakima.

The Garfield-Palouse Vikings girls track and field team took home first place in the state meet, which was held Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25, in Yakima.

The Vikings out-scored Mt. Vernon Christian by 14 points to capture the state title.

This would be the second-straight year where the Vikings girls win the 1B state title.

Along with the team title came individual state championship medals in their respective running and field events.

Freshman Kyra Brantner took second in state for the 100 meter race, fourth on the 4X 100 relay team, second in long jump, and third in triple jump.

Lola Edwards took second in the 3200 meter, followed by Ashleigh Hightree in third, and Courage Hightree in fifth.

The Oakesdale Nighthawks and St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse Eagles girls track and field teams each scored 22 team points to take ninth in state.

For the boys, the overall 1B state champion was Valley Christian with 101 team points. The Viking boys took fourth, scoring 38 team points.

St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse finished 14th, and Oakesdale took 25th.

On the 2B side, St. George's swept the field, taking home both the girls and boys titles. The Colfax Bulldog girls team finished 25th with six team points.

Colfax boys took 18th with 18 team points.
