COLFAX — On Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9, anglers will not be required to have a fishing license for certain species.
Trout and bass in lowland lakes across the state, as well as shad can be caught and kept without a license. However, starting this year, a valid license is still required for anyone 15 or older to harvest any species requiring a catch record card, including salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and halibut, and all shellfish.
State regulations on fish size and catch limits also remain in effect.
“Fish and Wildlife police remind you that failure to follow the regulations may result in a citation,” said Kirt Hughes, agency fish management division director. “Knowing the rules before heading out will make for a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.”
The free fishing weekend is part of legislation that created the Discover Pass, which is required to park on any land managed by the Department of Natural Resources, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The 2011 law directed State Parks to designate up to 12 free days when the pass would not be required to visit state parks.
A vehicle Access Pass, a Discover Pass and a two-pole endorsement will also not be required during the weekend.
