Local man sentenced to three years probation

Vehicle chase began in Troy, Idaho

Clarkston — A local man has been sentenced for leading a Latah County Sheriff's Deputy on a dangerous vehicle chase starting in Troy.

Jonathan Owens, 31, from Clarkston, was given three years probation by Latah County Second District Court Judge John Judge after pleading guilty to felony eluding.

Owens was arrested in January when he failed to stop for a deputy while riding a dirt bike in Troy. He led the deputy on a high-speed chase along State Highway 8, reaching nearly 90 mph, before driving into a field where he was eventually apprehended.

Reports indicate he spent 71 days in jail following his arrest on Wednesday, January 31.

On that day, deputies attempted to stop Owens' unregistered dirt bike on Idaho Highway 8 in Troy. He sped away at 90 mph, passing at least one vehicle in a no-passing zone before leaving the highway and driving through a field.

To ensure public safety, deputies discontinued the pursuit near the intersection of Schumacker Road and Idaho Highway 8.

However, the deputy later found Owens and his dirt bike on Driscoll Ridge Road, where Owens was taken into custody on charges of eluding and possessing stolen property.
