Colfax hosts Sagebrush Classic Junior Show

COLFAX — This weekend, on July 13-14, the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds will hold the Sagebrush Classic Junior Show.

The show began in 2016 and this will be the second year the Fairgrounds in Colfax has hosted the event.

There are three classes of steer, heifer and showmanship. Within showmanship, there will be a junior, intermediate and senior division with five places paid in each class and division.

In the steer classes, there will be a jackpot steer of champion and reserve, Charolais Influenced steer champion and reserve, Simmental Influenced steer champion and reserve, and Washington Cattle Feeders Market Steer Class payout.

The heifer classes will be a jackpot heifer champion and reserve, Charolais Influenced heifer champion and reserve, and Simmental Influenced heifer champion and reserve.

Showmanship classes will be junior, intermediate and senior divisions champions and reserve, along with pee wee and super peewee classes.

On Sunday, the check-in for heifers will be from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Showmanship, starting with pee wee, will start at 9 a.m. The All Breed Jackpot heifer show, Charolais Influence heifer class and Simmental Influence heifer class will start 30 minutes after Showmanship, or 12:30 p.m., whichever is earlier.

The show honors the legacy of Leslie Alexander, who died in a car accident in Montana in 2020.

This year, Jonwyn Ayres of Rogue River, Ore., returns to judge the show. Ayres received a bull riding scholarship to Oklahoma State University and is a livestock coach. This is her third year judging the event.

“She’s been very prominent in the livestock industry for a young woman of her age,” said Jana Koller, an organizer of the event. “She does a great job interacting with the kids and helping and teaching them. It’s awesome to have somebody as young as her who is so well-spoken and works with the kids.”
