Peter Zornes Memorial raises scholarship funds

This is the 16th year of the golf tournament

COLFAX - Golfers of several ages and experience levels came to the Colfax Golf Club for the 16th annual Peter Zornes Memorial Golf tournament on Saturday, July 13.

There were 64 golfers attending the event from across Washington, Oregon, Southern Idaho and Arizona. Participants received player welcome bags, tournament shirts and golf balls. There was also a silent auction to raise more money for the Peter A. Zornes Memorial Neuroscience Scholarship.

Kathy Zornes gave a short history of the tournament, from her initial idea of having a one-time event to raise a few dollars for the scholarship to its evolution to become an annual, summer event in its own right and with its own mission. She noted that this year, the tournament is dedicated to the memory of Joy Zornes, Peter's sister, who was a major part of planning and promoting the tournament every year, including this year. She helped launch the event with her mom just days before her unexpected passing.

The tournament was an 18-hole scramble format with additional games and contests like "marshmallow golf" and "toss the dice." Kai Seshiki of Pullman's Summit Therapy was on hand providing sunscreen, first aid and stretching advice.

After hitting the course, people gathered in the clubhouse for an air-conditioned dinner and announcement of the winners.

This year's putting contest winner was David Ellithorpe Jr., from Cle Elum, Wash. Long drive honors went to Mary Newby and Ryder Shoults. Closest to the pin was won by Donna Darling of Arizona.

The overall winner, with a score of 52, was the Randy Daniels team of Randy, Brandon Daniels, Dalton McNeilly and Jake (last name unavailable). They received the coveted Champions' Hats.

Runners-up for the day were defending champs, Steve Larkin, Matt Scholz, Jim Newby and Mary Newby, who finished one stroke behind with a 53.

This year, the Friend of the Tournament Award was given to Joshua Brown with deepest appreciation by Kathy Zornes.

"This special award was created by the Zornes family in 2008 following the first annual tournament to acknowledge a participant or supporter whose efforts and contributions went 'above and beyond' in ensuring a successful event," Zornes said. "Additionally, special recognition to the following individuals for their help before, during and after the event: Mike and Heather Stack, Marilyn Wigen, Tom Reich, Lynne and Phoebe Halley, Craig Groning, Tina Coe, Levi Coe, Janet Stroll, and members of the Colfax Golf Club!"

The 17th Annual Peter Zornes Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for July 12, 2025.
