Kids baking fun and BINGO

COLFAX - An abundance of apple sauce gave kids the chance to test out their baking skills Wednesday, Aug. 14.

The Colfax branch of the Whitman County Library, Council on Aging Human Services Nutrition and the Colfax Pantry teamed together with local youth baking delicious cakes.

While the cakes were baked kids were given coloring pages and played BINGO.

"Baking is a lot of hand on fun for kids," said Colfax local Lauren Olin, "Hopefully it will be delicious too."

Olin's two kids participated, aged 2 and 8.

"I really liked it, and it was super easy," said Izzy Olin, 8. "You had to measure exactly the right amount. Not the same as cooking. You can't do that in cooking."

Andrew Martinez, 9, said he enjoyed baking a cake. "I tried to follow instructions, but I got ahead of the instructions. My favorite part was the apple sauce part and squirting it out of the bag."

The applesauce was squeezed into a bag so the kids could squeeze it into the pans.

"The kids got to crack their own eggs and learned about hand washing," said Colfax local Sara Golden.

Johannah Strevy, who just turned 9, said that she enjoyed baking. "I liked it all," she said, "Using the giant whisks."

Gus Golden, who is turning 9 in October said that cracking the eggs was his favorite part.

Outside of the event, he said he likes baking brownies at his Nana's house.

"It was really fun." Zoey Bibler, 11 said. She added that she would bake again in the future.

"Probably cakes for birthdays," Bibler said, adding that she might bake with applesauce again.
