Recount ordered for key statewide race

Final primary election results certified Aug. 20

COLFAX — The final results from this month’s primary election in Washington have been tallied, revealing key outcomes across various races and measures. However, a mandatory recount will soon take place in one key contest.

In Whitman County, voter turnout for the primary was 42.62%, with a total of 9,690 ballots counted out of 22,735 registered voters.

The final certification of these results for Whitman County occurred Tuesday, Aug. 20, setting the stage for the general election in November.

According to Whitman County Auditors office, these are the results for Whitman County:

Locally, Pullman attorneys Roger Sandberg and Jenna Brozik will advance to the November general election for Whitman County Superior Court Judge. Sandberg led with 55% of the vote, defeating Brozik, who received 30.36%, and Steve Martonick, who garnered 14.47%.

On the local measures front, the Farmington Street and current expense fund levies failed to pass, while Garfield’s street levy and Whitman County Fire District 7’s levy in Rosalia were approved.

Despite the finality of these results, Whitman County Auditor Sandy Jamison announced an important update today. At the direction of the Washington Secretary of State, the Whitman County Canvassing Board has ordered a mandatory hand recount of the Commissioner of Public Lands contest.

This recount began Monday, Aug. 26, at 9:30 a.m. in the elections processing room at 304 N. Main Street in Colfax.

The recount process is expected to continue throughout the week until completion.

The results will be certified by the Whitman County Canvassing Board on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 3 p.m. in the conference room of the Whitman County elections office.

Both the recount process and the Canvassing Board Certification meeting will be open to the public for observation.

Following the certification by all counties, the Secretary of State will certify the statewide results on Sept. 4.

Votes in Whitman County for State executive races saw Bob Ferguson with 34.24% of the vote, while Dave Reichert led narrowly with 34.54%. Dan Matthews topped the Lt. Governor race with 30.02%, and Dale Whitaker led the Secretary of State contest with 49.5%.

In the U.S. Senate race, Maria Cantwell led with 48.09% of the vote, while Dr. Raul Garcia, preferring the GOP Party, received 25.96%. In the Congressional District 5 race, Michael Baumgartner garnered the most votes with 36.54%, followed by Carmela Conroy with 16.7%.

For state legislative positions, Mark G. Schoesler secured 92.07% of the vote for State Senator in District 9. In the State Representative races, Joe Schmick led in Position 2 with 58.98%, and Mary Dye led in Position 1 with 57.39%.

Total statewide election results showed that Bob Ferguson (Democratic Party) led the gubernatorial race with 884,268 votes (44.88%), followed by Dave Reichert (Republican Party) with 541,533 votes (27.48%) and Semi Bird (Republican Party) with 212,692 votes (10.79%).

In the race for Lieutenant Governor, Denny Heck (Democratic Party) secured 927,395 votes (48.62%), and Dan Matthews (Republican Party) received 438,537 votes (22.99%).

Steve Hobbs (Democratic Party) topped the Secretary of State race with 930,533 votes (48.38%), while Dale Whitaker (Republican Party) earned 709,046 votes (36.87%).
