Tekoa School District resolves agenda items

Set to hire new members

TEKOA — Tekoa School Board is set to meet to discuss multiple action items including budgeting and hiring new staff members before the 2024-2025 school year begins Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The Tekoa School District Board of Directors held a regular meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m. at the Tekoa School District Office.

The agenda for this meeting, which occurred after press time for this publication of the Whitman County Gazette, included several key items.

The consent agenda, according to the agenda, covered the approval of various financial reports and minutes from previous meetings.

This included July month-end accounts payable, August accounts payable, and payroll details.

The consent agenda also includes the approval of the minutes from the July 24 regular meeting and the Aug. 12 special meeting.

Discussion items on the agenda included a Land Acknowledgment Statement and the McKinstry meeting held on Aug. 26.

Action items on the agenda involve personnel decisions, including hiring Alyssa Gelhaus as MS and High School Cross Country Head Coach, Ron Miller as MS Football Assistant Coach, Jace Gwinn as High School Football Assistant Coach, and Roger Harnack as High School Wrestling Coach. Other action items include approving the 2024-2025 School Calendar, Supplemental Contracts, Fees, Policy #3207 for a first reading and Policy #3245 for a final reading.

In the minutes from the July 24 meeting, the Board convened at 5:36 p.m. for a budget hearing. Lisa Haas presented the 2024-2025 budget and answered questions regarding the General Capital Projects, Associated Student Body, and Transportation funds.

The agenda was amended to include hiring Jon Andre Lamoureux as a JH/High School Math/Science Teacher and Kristena Hansen as an Elementary Secretary. Superintendent Mike Jones proposed adding discussions on preschool tuition and the elementary boiler to the agenda.

Administration reports covered Logan O’Neill’s recommendation as the new high school football coach, updates on fall sports and preparations for the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Jones acknowledged Lisa Haas’s work on the budget and discussed the upcoming McKinstry meeting, school surplus sale and a proposed newsletter.

Discussion items included a proposed increase in preschool tuition and considerations regarding selling the old elementary boiler.

The Board approved Resolution #01-2025 for the 2024-2025 budget, personnel changes, Policy #3245, and the preschool tuition increase.

The elementary boiler was offered for sale to McKinstry for $20,000.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:09 p.m.
