Palouse Skate Garden seeks volunteers

PALOUSE — The garden above the Tony Kettel Skate Garden is set to undergo significant transformations over the next three weeks, and the Garden Transformation Team is calling on community volunteers to help bring these plans to life.

“We have some ambitious goals for the garden, and we’re hoping to rally as many volunteers as possible to make it happen,” said Nicole Flansburg, co-chair of the Garden Transformation Team.

Work began on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 8 a.m., when volunteers replanted the fire-damaged bed and reinstalled drip irrigation along the fenceline beds.

The following evening, on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m., volunteers will rake loose rocks, gather and combine piles, load leaf litter and soft vegetation, empty weed bins, and begin laying weed-block fabric on a flat area.

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m., the focus will shift to gravelling two footpaths near the Willow tree, continue to lay weed-block fabric and deadheading flowers.

The final event is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m., when volunteers will install removable driveway access bollards, distribute 25 yards of bark over the weed-block, secure garbage cans with T-posts and install posts for temporary signs.

In addition to these events, the team is seeking skilled volunteers for a special project this fall.

The project involves installing a semi-permanent site sign in the upper garden, made from powder-coated sheet metal with cut-out letters and a logo. This sign will temporarily identify the garden location until a staircase is installed and volunteers with experience in building and sign installation are especially needed.

“Anyone who can spare a few hours is encouraged to come out and lend a hand,” Flansburg said. “If you have rakes, shovels, or garden tools, please bring them with you. We will have some tools available on site as well.”

Volunteers are asked to reach out with any questions and to confirm their participation.
