'Camelot' play opens tonight

PULLMAN — The Regional Theatre of the Palouse is bringing King Arthur and the knights of his round table to the musical stage presenting Lerner and Loewe’s Broadway Musical ‘Camelot.’

Starting tonight, Thursday, Sept. 12 and running through Sept. 22, the musical evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Matinees are set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Portraying King Arthur, Dennis McGreevy has performed in several local productions including ‘Les Miserables’ as Jean Valjean, ‘Secret Garden’ as Archibald Craven and is pursuing a master of fine arts degree in theater from University of Idaho.

McGreevy’s children are also pursuing careers in the arts.

“RTOP means so much to me and to my family, both years ago and again today. Just call me The Once and Future King,” McGreevy said.

The Broadway musical was inspired by the legend of King Arthur and adapted from T.H. White’s “The Once and Future King” and is a musical story of the Knights of the Round Table and the love triangle of Arthur, Lancelot and Guinevere.

Lyricist and Librettist Alan Jay Lerner came across “The Once and Future King,” decided it was meant for the theater.

After convincing composer Frederick Loewe, who he had teamed up with for Broadway shows including “Brigadoon,” “Paint Your Wagon” and “My Fair Lady,” he then made the staged musical production of “Camelot.”
