Boness brothers lead Broncos to win

SPANGLE — The Liberty Lancers were treated to an episode of the Boness show Friday night, Sept. 6, as the visiting Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos came to town.

Senior Brody Boness scored three touchdowns and younger brother Cameron Boness passed for two scores in a 28-22 Lind-Ritzville/Sprague victory over the Northeast 2B rival Lancers.

The Broncos opened the game with a brother-to-brother touchdown pass, as Cameron Boness hit Brody Boness for a 42-yard score. Brody Boness added the point after to take a 7-0 lead.

Brody Boness struck again in the first quarter on a 46-yard TD run and another point-after to take a 14-0 lead.

Late in the quarter, Liberty got on the board and the point-after was good. The first quarter ended 14-7.

Early in the second quarter, the Lancers would take the lead with another TD and a 2-point conversion.

But the Broncos weren’t ready to cede the half.

Cameron Boness threw a 7-yarder to Carson Kubik for another TD. The Broncos went for 2 points, but failed and took a 20-15 lead into the halftime break.

Brody Boness would score again for the Broncos on an 81-yard run in the third quarter — the longest play of the game. And a successful 2-point conversion put the score at 28-15 with one quarter to go.

Liberty added a fourth-quarter touchdown and point-after in the fourth quarter, but fell short on the scoreboard, with Lind-Ritzville winning 28-22.

Cameron Boness completed 4-of-13 passes for 66 yards and 2 touchdowns.

On the ground, Brody Boness carred 27 times for 289 yards and 2 touchdowns. Zach Klein carried twice for 9 yards and Cameron Boness carred three times for minus-8 yards and two fumbles. Owen York also carried twice for 16 yards.

Brody Boness was the Broncos’ top receiver with 2 catches for 51 yards and a TD. Beau Fode had 1 catch for 8 yards and Kubik one for 7.

On defense, Brody Boness and Kubik each had 8 tackles, Klein had 5.

Others with tackles in the game include Turner Slack, Fode and Jerod Harder each with 3 tackles, Brix Curtis and Kaleb Kuykendall each with 2, and Douglas Olson and Brock Tracy with 1.

With a season-opening win under their belts, the Broncos head back on the road this week to Manson to take on the Class 2B Trojans in a non-league game. Manson is coming off a season-opening loss last week, 21-17, to the Cle Elum-Roslyn Warriors.

In other games, Adams County’s only other team — the Othello Huskies — topped the Ellensburg Bulldogs, 28-9, on the road in a Class 2A game. And the nearby Odessa Tigers opened their season at home, routing Columbia (Hunters), 78-6.

Odessa travels to Oroville this Friday to take on the Hornets in a non-league game. Oroville has not yet played this season.

And in its home-opener, Othello will host the Class 1A Connell Eagles on Friday. The Eagles are coming off an 8-7 loss to Zillah.
