Garfield-Palouse falls to Liberty Christian

It was Willy Wolterings first game back as head coach

PALOUSE — The Garfield-Palouse Vikings lost the first game of the season under (somewhat) new Head Coach Willy Woltering.

Woltering is back as headman of the Vikings after a number of years away from the gridiron.

The Vikings struck first as Lane Collier punched in a 3-yard run in the first quarter, but Liberty Christian answered back with a 3-yard run by Perry Pottle and a 30-yard run by Charlie Branning.

Each team scored twice in the second quarter with Ryker Wageman scoring on a 37-yard pass and Joey Esley getting a 19-yard touchdown pass, each from Pottle. Gar-Pal’s Kaleb Kelnhofer scored on a 1-yard run and Coller got a 49-yard touchdown run.

At halftime, Liberty Christian led 30-20.

Liberty Christian began to run away with the game as the team scored 22 points to Gar-Pal’s 8 in the third quarter. Paff scored on a 17-yard run for Gar-Pal.

In the fourth quarter, Paff scored again on a 68-yard run, but it would be the final score for the Vikings. Liberty Christian scored 12 points in the last quarter, giving it the 64-36 win.

Gar-Pal’s Collier rushed for 240 yards on 32 carries and scored two touchdowns. Paff went 8-for-15 passing for 164 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns.

Next up for the Vikings is an away game against Almira-Coulee-Hartline at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 in Coulee City, Wash.
