Rosalia Railroad Bridge Day

ROSALIA — Rail fans can gather in Rosalia for several events centered around railroad history.

The library is teaming up with Cascade Rail Foundation and Thunderhead Ranch to put on a railroad history presentation in downtown Rosalia at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5.

After the presentation, attendees can take a guided history hike on the former Milwaukee Road right of way over the Rosalia Concrete Arch bridges which are now part of the Palouse to Cascades State Park trail.

The hike after the presentation will feature comparative historic photos of the rail routes, the Pine Creek valley and the construction of the concrete arch bridges and the “daylighting” of the tunnel.

It is recommended participants wear sturdy walking shoes and they can choose one or two-mile round trip guided walking tour on the gravel trail.

The program featuring Professor Emeritus Washington State University will show a photographic “History of Palouse Railroads,” by Robert G. Olsen taking place at the new library location, 526 South Whitman Avenue.

There will also be a hobo quilt-based artwork and symbols display during the presentation.

Those interested are invited to sign up for a class to learn about the historical code and art form.

The class is offered at noon at the library on Saturday, Sept. 28, and will occur again at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Those who want to take the classes are asked to sign up due to limited class sizes.

To sign up contact the Rosalia library at (509)-523-3109 or email rosalia@whitcolib.org.
