COLFAX - With both teams clad in pink for cancer awareness, the Lind-Ritzville-Sprague (LRS) Broncos defeated the Colfax Bulldogs, 3-2, in a heated Northeast 2B League volleyball match Thursday, Oct. 10.
Set scores for the match were 25-22, 23-25, 15-25, 25-18 and 15-10. The Broncos moved to 11-1 on the season and Colfax fell to 4-7.
"It's been really exciting to plan all of this," said Colfax senior Ava Swan. "The posters on the wall, the auction, getting ready for it with the anticipation and seeing it all pulled off with everyone coming and supporting and bidding on items and watch our full five-set match is really cool."
The teams traded points in set one with kills by LRS senior libero Madisyn Cameron and Swan until the set was tied, 15-15. An ace by senior Brenna Gilchrist gave Colfax the advantage, but a kill by freshman Willow Lawler helped LRS come back and even the score, 22-22. A kill by junior Hannah Towne broke the tie and the Broncos scored the remaining points needed to win set one, 25-22.
"I'm not really mad at this loss, obviously it sucks to lose but it was still a good match," Swan said. "It was really close, so we're going to keep the momentum going. Having this (momentum) going into the rest of League and Districts is really important."
In set two, an ace by sophomore Avery Andrus gave the Bulldogs a 6-3 advantage, but aces by junior Saige Galbreath and senior Addy Colbert allowed the Broncos to lessen the gap, trailing 9-8.
The score remained close the rest of the way and Colfax came out ahead, winning set two, 25-23.
A pair of aces by Andrus gave Colfax an early lead in set three.
"Overall we served much better than we have been," said Colfax coach Megan Dorman. "I thought it was the first time we've gone back to serving spots. At times our defense was better than it has been. Picking up tips and chips was better than it has been, by far.
The first four points of the set for LRS were due to fumbled serves by Colfax. Utilizing Swan's spikes with assists by junior setter Cianna Gibb allowed the Bulldogs to run the court and win set three, 25-15.
"Couple of quiet times for us, so we need to work on that piece," Dorman said. "But overall our togetherness was better tonight with how we supported each other, trusted each other. I thought that was a lot better."
Five aces by Colfax early in set four gave the Bulldogs a 10-6 lead, but the Broncos quickly recovered and tied the set, 12-12 on a block kill by junior middle blocker Saige Galbreath.
Two front-line block kills and more kills by Colbert and Towne gave the Broncos a strong 24-16 advantage. An ace by Gibb gave the Bulldogs some life, but on the next volley Colfax hit the ball out of bounds and the Broncos won set four, 25-18.
An ace by Galbreath opened the scoring in set five, but a kill by Swan tied the final set. LRS would gain a one-point lead but Colfax would keep tying the set every point until the score was 7-7.
Colfax gained the next two points, causing LRS coach Cari Galbreath to call a timeout. The set became tied again at 10-10 when LRS senior Danika Cox went on a serving spree. She tallied three aces on the way to a Broncos 15-10 victory.
Swan led Colfax with 27 kills and 25 digs. Gibb had 41 assists.
The Bulldogs went on to play in the Liberty tournament on Saturday, Oct. 12. Colfax finished the tournament with three wins and two losses in best-of-three set matchups.
Colfax defeated Oakesdale, 25-20, 25-22, defeated Okanogan, 26-24, 26-16, and defeated Newport, 25-20, 25-13. Wilbur-Creston-Keller defeated Colfax, 13-25, 25-19, 15-13, and Liberty beat Colfax, 22-25, 25-12, 15-9.
Throughout the tournament, Swan had 71 kills, 30 digs and 11 blocks. Gibb had 101 kills, 34 digs and three blocks. Gilchrist had 31 digs, 18 kills and eight aces. Senior middle blocker Karly Wigen had 13 kills and five blocks.
