Crash in Wawawai, one air-lifted

Distracted driver cited after truck crash in canyon

COLFAX — Deputies from the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from Fire District 14 and Lewiston Fire responded to a two-vehicle crash on Wawawai Road near milepost 11 shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17.

According to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, Joshua Godwin, 37, of Clarkston, was traveling northbound and crossed the centerline, striking a newer-model GMC passenger truck traveling southbound.

Godwin was driving a late-model GMC passenger truck.

The driver of the southbound vehicle sustained serious injuries and was trapped inside before being extricated by emergency crews.

“This is just a general reminder always to be cautious, even when the roadways are dry or wet out. We take for granted that we are in a nice car with a heater or stereo. The laws of physics don’t stop because your car is involved in an accident. That is where the laws of physics actually come into play,” said Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers.

The injured driver was later airlifted to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment.

Godwin was cited for negligent driving. He was uninjured in the crash.

“That is why it is important to slow down. I am old-fashioned, I guess. I tell my own kids not to even pass. I tell them to wait out and drive the last 5, 10 or even 15 miles slower. The important thing is to slow down and respect the roadway,” said Myers.

According to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office, the crash is still under investigation.
