WSU Police increase patrols on campus
PULLMAN — Washington State University police are investigating a sexual assault that allegedly occurred on campus earlier this month.
The victim, an unnamed female student, told police the assault took place at about 8 p.m. Oct. 21 in the parking lot south of Beasley Coliseum. She said she was grabbed from behind and choked until she lost consciousness.
“When she came to, she was in the same spot; all of her clothes were on, but she felt that she had been sexually assaulted,” University Police Chief Gary Jenkins said. “She did not see or hear him.”
“We are going through our camera footage. We haven’t turned up anything or found anything that has been provided.”
In response, campus police have increased patrols. They are also urging the campus community to report any crime immediately.
“We ask students to be vigilant and take precautions. If you feel uncomfortable walking at night, walk in pairs,” he said. “We have a walking escort service with our police cadets at nighttime.”
Walking escorts are free to the public from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., Wednesday through Saturday. To request a police cadet escort late at night, call 509-432-3818.
Rumor mill
While taking steps to protect the public, the chief also expressed concern regarding rumors spreading across both WSU and University of Idaho campuses.
“We have heard rumors of a serial rapist between here and U of I,” he said. “Those rumors are unfounded.”
On Monday, Oct. 28, Jenkins met with University of Idaho staff who had also heard of the same rumor.
“They are working to address those rumors and send a message about misinformation,” Jenkins said. “If you have questions, check with an official source. Check with university security or official sources.”
