Serving Whitman County since 1877
Call me “old fashioned,” I must be if I still believe in the “Power of the Press” as a public forum to comment on the issues of the day.
Lately, it seems to me that our municipal and county agencies are either not following their directives of serving for the “good and safety of the pubic” or they have become powerless to directly enforce their won rules and regulations.
Case in point, you cannot park on Main Street overnight, but you can park on City property for as long as you want and even with expired tabs.
You can have a business on Main Street, but in the back alleys, out of sight, you can have a potential fire and health issue. You can try to mask the clutter with tarps, but is that a real solution? This has already had a negative impact on the adjoining establishments and area.
The store fronts on Main Street, a vast majority are well maintained, after all it is good business practice, but some are not. The question is: If a building is not maintained on the outside, what is it like on the inside? Is an unoccupied building another potential safety or health hazard?
Granted, small cities like Colfax are always understaffed and underfunded, and our civic leadership can’t be everywhere all the time. That is why we can have a public forum like the Whitman County Gazette to bring to the forefront the concerns of the day.
I issue a challenge to our city, county leadership and agencies to do their utmost to make Colfax a safer, cleaner and more beautiful city.
Sidney Lee,
Colfax
