Pertussis outbreak rises in county

Eleven more cases break out on the Palouse

COLFAX — Whitman County Public Health (WCPH) is investigating an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) within the county.

As of November 1, there have been 48 confirmed cases, an increase of 11 since October 25.

Health officials are urging those diagnosed to complete a five-day course of antibiotics and to remain isolated until treatment is finished.

Public health staff actively contact new cases to conduct interviews and trace potential exposures.

Pertussis, caused by the Bordetella pertussis bacterium, spreads through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes.

Infants under 12 months and those with compromised immune systems face the highest risk of severe complications, including pneumonia and seizures.

The Whitman County Public Health office advises residents to stay updated on immunizations, particularly DTaP for children and Tdap boosters for adolescents and adults.

Pregnant women are encouraged to receive the Tdap vaccine in the third trimester to protect newborns. Residents can contact WCPH at (509) 332-6752 to report potential contact with a pertussis case.
