Colfax recognizes veterans

COLFAX - Colfax High School hosted a Veterans Day assembly on Friday, Nov. 9, bringing together students, staff, and community members.

The ceremony, held at 9 a.m., featured performances, speeches and special presentations to recognize local veterans.

The assembly began with a welcome from Colfax Jr./Sr-high Principal David Gibb. JP McAnally and Karly Wiger served as masters of ceremonies.

The assembly was organized by student body members of the Colfax Associated Student Body (ASB.)

"I think they did a wonderful job in putting that together to our veteran's student body," said Gibb. "It goes back a long time. We have done it every year since I have been here. It's at least 17 years."

The Pullman Fire Department presented the flag, followed by resident Craig Willson singing the "National Anthem."

Students Vincent Brumley, Max Mellor, Zoe Bibler, McCrea Griffin and brothers Daniel and Spencer Robinson led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Young students also honored veterans, with the kindergarten class performing "You're a Grand Old Flag" and fifth graders reciting the poem "Veterans Day."

Afterward, the fifth-grade students presented copies of the poem, each with personal illustrations, to the attending veterans.

Navy veteran Suzy McNeilly shared her experiences serving when women were not allowed on Naval ships and described her work in military hospitals.

Chloe Hall and Paige Cocking thanked veterans by reading aloud the names of local service members; each name met with applause.

"It is an important day for us to remember the people who give us an opportunity to agree or disagree. We owe our veterans a whole debt of gratitude," Gibb said.

To conclude the ceremony, the Pullman Fire Department retired the flags and refreshments were served in the school cafeteria for all attendees.
