Steptoe honors veterans

STEPTOE - The annual Steptoe Elementary Veterans Day assembly on Friday, Nov. 8 in honor of those who have served.

Elementary school teacher Sarah Mayer said the 5th through 8th graders put together the depiction of the Korean War memorial that could be seen standing next to all the wartime memorabilia that covered tables.

Teacher, Principal and Superintendent Eric Patton had gathered all the memorabilia for those in attendance to look through.

"The students made 19 soldiers, weapons, helmets, everything," Mayer said, noting Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade also constructed the poppies.

The children sang patriotic and Armed Forces branch songs, asking veterans to stand during the ones they served for.

After the concert, Quilts of Valor Coordinator Diana King presented eight veterans Quilts of Valor including Greg Brumley, John Burns, Floyd Holland, Joseph Osborn, John Stelzer, Tim Tate and Michael Watson.

"A quilt consists of three layers," King said adding the layers are thought of in the following ways:

The top with many colors, shapes and fabrics represents all those who serve in the Armed Forces and the battings emits warmth representing comfort and healing.

"The backing is strength," said King. "Together with the thousands of stitches, it represents you, your families and our communities, all coming together and supporting one another."

Each Veteran was given a quilt and the opportunity to speak on their time in the service.

"With deep appreciation for your sacrifice and service, welcome home," said King.
