Washington wins men 10K, Oregon wins women 6K
COLFAX - The Colfax Golf Course and Country Club hosted the NCAA Division I West Regional cross country meet on Friday, Nov. 15.
Runners from 39 collegiate teams across the country gathered in Colfax and attempted to win a spot at the NCAA DI National Championships, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The top-two, seven-person teams from each Regional automatically qualify for Nationals, along with 38 individuals selected through an automatic qualifier and at-large bid. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 at Regionals.
At the West Regional in Colfax, Washington won the Men's 10K with 66 points, followed by Oregon with 68 points, earning both teams a spot at Nationals. For the Women's 6K race, Oregon took first place with 43 points and Stanford placed second with 67 points.
Other men's teams from the state of Washington included Gonzaga placing sixth with 135 points, Washington State (WSU) ninth with 244 points, Eastern Washington (EWU) 17th with 534 points and Seattle finishing 30th with 859 points.
For the women's race, other Washington teams included Washington placing third with 101 points, Gonzaga fourth with 134 points, WSU seventh with 169 points, Seattle 17th with 522 points and EWU 21st with 584 points.
Gonzaga received a men's at-large team bid to go to Nationals. Both Gonzaga and Washington received a women's at-large team bid for Nationals.
Individual men's qualifiers for Nationals from the West include Evans Kurui from WSU (who placed first at the West Regional meet in Colfax), Matt Strangio from Portland, Wil Smith from Gonzaga (sixth at the West Regional) and Joe Hudson from Boise State. Women individual National qualifiers include Zenah Cheptoo from WSU (10th at Regional), Judy Chepkoech from Arizona State (fifth at Regional), Laura Pellicoro from Portland (eighth at Regional) and Kaiya Robertson from Boise State (ninth at Regional).
