Tekoa holds first concert in years

Approximately five years since last band concert

TEKOA - The School District held its first band concert in years Wednesday, Dec. 11, with students utilizing the music program that started this year.

Superintendent Mike Jones said it has been about five years since the school has been able to put on a concert.

Principal Yolanda Bone said the middle school band performed two songs including 'A Christmas Chant,' and 'Holiday Sampler."

Up next was the high school band performing 'O Little Town of Bethlehem' and 'Deck'n the Halls,' a jazz version of 'Deck the Halls.'

At the beginning of the school year, Music Teacher Jordan Nicholson brought back music classes for grades 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

Para Professional Whitney Bloom also started working with the elementary to provide general music education to pre-school through 3rd grade students.

"It was fun to see the kids up there Wednesday night," Jones said. "We're excited to see the kids back up there making music."

Bone said there is not a future concert planned at this time, but she is anticipating one.

"We're just trying to make sure the families and the community know the progress they've made," she said, adding the school wants to showcase how proud they are of how far the students have come in such a short amount of time.

"Before the first performance they were nervous." said Bone. "When they got up there it was almost like a dose of adrenaline and they've been very excited afterwards about their accomplishment."
