SJEL boys go 0-4 on the week
ST. JOHN - Playing four games in seven days, the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse (SJEL) Eagles boys basketball team competed against both league and non-league opponents last week.
The Eagles fell to 2B foe Upper Columbia Academy (UCA) Lions, 60-38, on Wednesday, Dec. 11. SJEL then lost to the Garfield-Palouse (Gar-Pal) Vikings, 62-36, on Friday, Dec. 13, before ending the weekend with a 73-34 loss to the Oakesdale Nighthawks on Saturday, Dec. 14.
Against the Lions, it was a close matchup through the first half. UCA scored 11 points and SJEL scored eight for only a three-point deficit to end the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Eagles scored nine and the Lions scored 10 to give a halftime scoreboard of 21-17 in favor of the Lions.
The claws came out for the Lions in the third quarter, scoring 31 points and holding the Eagles to six. SJEL tried to make a comeback in the final quarter, scoring 15 points and holding UCA to eight to five a final 60-38 score for the UCA win.
Against Gar-Pal, the Vikings gained single-digit advantages in each quarter until the fourth to take the win against the Eagles.
At the end of the first quarter, Gar-Pal had a 10-6 lead. The Eagles scored another six points in the second half while the Vikings scored 14, giving a halftime score of 24-12.
The Eagles had their best quarter of the game to open the second half, scoring 16 points, but so did the Vikings, adding 21 to their advantage. SJEL scored seven in the final frame with Gar-Pal notching 17 points to give the final 61-36 score.
Bear Brewer led the Eagles with 19 points on five field goals and shooting 8-for-12 from the free-throw line. Ty Pierson added seven points on two 3-pointers and went 1-for-2 at the line. Warren Repp added a 3-pointer for the Eagles.
"We played better, tougher, we shot more and played better," said Eagles assistant coach Mike Thomas. "Proud of the boys in that second half, they came out and stuck together and had a little bit of fun on the floor there at the end.
Against Oakesdale, the Eagles came out on fire to start the game, taking an 18-7 lead over the Nighthawks to end the first quarter. Oakesdale then held SJEL to single digits in each quarter for the remainder of the game while adding 22 points in the second and 28 in the third. The Eagles scored five in the second and seven in the third.
With Oakesdale scoring 16 in the final quarter and holding SJEL to four in the same frame, the Nighthawks got the 73-34 win.
Next up for the Eagles was to take on the Prescott Tigers on Tuesday night, after press time. SJEL will next face the Colton Wildcats in an away game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec.
