Boys and girls basketball defeats Medical Lake
MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - After splitting games against Lakeside on Tuesday, Dec. 17, both the Colfax boys and girls basketball teams went into Medical Lake Cardinals territory and came away with victories on Friday, Dec. 20.
The Bulldog boys defeated Lakeside, 68-33, and won against Medical Lake, 77-48, bringing their record to 6-1 on the season.
The Colfax girls narroly fell to Lakeside, 53-48, on Tuesday before bouncing back strong against the Cardinals, winning 63-17, and making the team 4-3 so far this year.
Boys game
Colfax controlled the court early against the Crdinals, taking an 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
By halftime, the Bulldogs built a 40-25 advantage. The Bulldogs continued to dominate by outscoring Medical Lake, 25-10, in the third quarter before the final tally of 77-48 for the Bulldogs.
Senior Jayce Kelly led the bulldogs with 25 points from nine field goals, including five 3-pointers and shooting 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Junior Ledger Kelly added 15 points on five field goals and going 3-for-3 from the line.
Junior Adrik Jenkin scored 14 points on five field goals, four of them 3-pointers, and sophomore Caleb Lustig contributed 11 points on five buckets. The team sank 6-for-9 free throws for 66.6%.
Girls game
The Colfax girls defense allowed Medical Lake to score just single digits in each of the four quarters while the offense gained double digits in three of the four during the win against the Cardinals.
Colfax took a commanding 22-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 41-5 at halftime. After leading 54-14 to end the third quarter, the Bulldogs gained the 63-17 victory.
Bulldogs eighth grader Allie Jenkin led her team with 20 points, hitting three 3-points and notching six rebounds, six steals and three assists. Junior Lola Hennigar contributed 12 points on five field goals and shooting 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Hennigar added six rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Senior Brenna Gilchrist and Ava Swan each scored 12 points on five field goals and two free throws. Gilchrist had nine rebounds, nine steals and two assists while Swan had five rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
The Bulldogs defense collectively forced 26 turnovers for the Cardinals.
Both boys and girls will next head to Spokane Valley for a tournament at West Valley High School. The girls will play the Naches Valley Rangers at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27 before taking on the Colville Crimson Hawks at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30. The boys will play the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at the Rogers Pirates at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30.
The Bulldogs will return home on Thursday, Jan. 9, to take on the Asotin Panthers with the girls game starting at 6 p.m. and the boys playing at 7:30 p.m.
