Games against Wilbur-Creston-Keller canceled
OAKESDALE — After the Oakesdale Nighthawks boys and girls basketball games against the Wilbur-Creston-Keller Wildcats were canceled on Wednesday, Dec. 18, the Nighthawks played over the weekend against the Dayton Bulldogs and Pomeroy Pirates.
The Oakesdale girls defeated Dayton, 50-21, on Friday, Dec. 20, before beating the Pomeroy Pirates, 31-20, on Saturday, Dec. 21. The Nighthawks boys beat the Bulldogs, 59-41, on Friday and fell to the Pirates, 65-46, on Saturday.
Girls go 2-0
Against Dayton, the Nighthawks gained a 12-7 lead to end the first quarter and took a 24-10 lead at halftime.
The Oakesdale defense shut out the Bulldogs in the third quarter while the offense added 19 points on the board. Dayton scored 11 in the fourth quarter and Oakesdale scored seven in the final frame for the Nighthawks to get the 50-21 win.
Against Pomeroy, it was a low-scoring matchup through the game with only a slight advantage for Pomeroy early.
The Pirates gained a 6-5 lead to end the first quarter and at halftime, the Nighthawks had the game tied at 10 all. Oakesdale made a second-half push, scoring 11 points in the third and 10 in the fourth while holding Pomeroy to four points in the third and six in the fourth to get the 31-20 victory.
Lucy Hockett led the Nighthawks with 13 points on four field goals and shot 50% from the free-throw line, sinking 5-of-10. Bradyn Henley added nine points for Oakesdale, making two field goals and also going 50% from the line at 4-for-8.
Megan Crider added four points, Lyla Kjack scored three and Evelyn Gouke put two points on the board for Oakesdale.
Boys go 1-1
The Nighthawks handily defeated the Bulldogs on Friday night for the 59-41 win.
Oakesdale gained a two-point advantage to end the first quarter, leading 15-13, and held a 32-23 lead at halftime. The Nighthawks added 14 points to the scoreboard in the third and 13 in the fourth while holding the Bulldogs to 10 points in the third and eight points in the fourth for the win.
Against Pomeroy, the Pirates took a commanding 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 31-16 at halftime. The Nighthawks kept pace with the Pirates for the remainder of the game, but couldn’t gain an advantage. Oakesdale scored 15 points in each of the third and fourth quarters while Pomeroy scored 15 in the third and 19 in the fourth.
Emeric Anderson led the Nighthawks with 14 points on five field goals and went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Ryker Reed added 11 points from two field goals, one of them a 3-pointer, and sank 6-of-10 at the line.
Jake Melhaus, Avery Roper and Dawson Lobdell each added five points for Oakesdale with Caleb Wagner notching four.
