Girls basketball team wins, boys fall
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The Pullman Greyhounds split weekend games at the Eagle Holiday Classic competition on Saturday, Dec. 28.
The Greyhound girls defeated the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars, 65-54, and the boys fell to the Northwest Christian Crusaders, 70-62.
For the girls game, Pullman leaped to a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, the Greyhounds led 33-21.
Pullman added 19 points in the third quarter while holding Tri-Cities Prep to 17. In the final frame, the Jaguars attempted a comeback, scoring 16 points to Pullman’s 13, but it fell short and the Greyhounds won the game, 65-54.
Grace Kuhle led the Greyhounds with 16 points on six field goals and going 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. River Sykes added 15 points on six field goals and shooting 3-for-5 at the charity stripe. Bri Rasmussen tallied 12 points for the Greyhounds.
For the boys game, it was a close matchup early on as Northwest Christian led, 20-19, at the end of the opening quarter. The Crusaders pulled away in the second quarter, scoring 21 points and holding the Greyhounds to 13 for a halftime score of 41-32 for Northwest Christian.
The Crusaders extended their lead in the third quarter, scoring 17 points to Pullman’s 14. The Greyhounds made a final push in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points to Northwest Christian’s 12, but it wasn’t enough and the Crusader’s came away with the 70-62 victory.
Daniel Kwon led the Greyhounds with 21 points on 10 field goals and a free throw. Brandon Brown scored 11 points for Pullman off of four field goals, three of them 3-pointers. Vaughn Holtad added six points and Gavyn Dealy scored four for the Greyhounds.
Pullman continued its journey through the Eagle Holiday Classic tournament on Monday, Dec. 30, after press time. The boys played 2B opponent St. George’s at 8 p.m. and the girls played 3A’s Mt. Spokane at 6:30 p.m.
Next up for the Greyhounds will be to take on 1A opponent Lakeside (Nine Mile) at home on Friday, Jan. 3. The girls varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m. with the boys to follow at 7 p.m.
