Man pleads not guilty to rape charges

McCall waives right to speedy trial, date set for March 21

PULLMAN - A 19-year-old Pullman man facing charges of rape, assault and stalking pled not guilty to all counts, Friday, Jan. 10.

During a Whitman County Superior Court arraignment Friday, Jan. 10, Cavan McCall pled not guilty to charges of two counts of second-degree rape, fourth-degree assault and stalking.

The charges stem from a report of a sex offense at 4:01 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5.

Pullman Police Officer Breauna Carpenter responded to the Pullman Regional Hospital E.R. where the victim was receiving medical care related to the assault, states court records.

Carpenter reported the victim identified the suspect as McCall who she stated she did not know well, but growing up she had been close to his family.

The victim stated she was reconnected with McCall after spending time with his family during Thanksgiving, Carpenter reported.

According to reports, the victim invited McCall to her house the morning of Dec. 29, 2024, to talk since he seemed "really stressed out."

Reports state the woman alleged that McCall raped her repeatedly, bruised, bit and strangled her.

The woman stated she could only get McCall to leave by lying and saying they could do it again and was too afraid to tell him that he had raped her, for fear of what would happen, according to reports.

"Said she was 'genuinely afraid he was going to kill me or knock me unconscious or hurt me further that night," Carpenter reported.

McCall reportedly continued to message the victim, showing up to her residence and parking in the parking lot, as well as threatening to "kidnap" her multiple times.

"There was a significant number of messages," Carpenter reported.

Carpenter reported a similar pre-trial sexual assault protection order placed on McCall after being charged with raping an ex-girlfriend.

"I briefly read that case and noted several similarities between what that victim described," Carpenter reported.

Upon arriving to McCall's residence to discuss the alleged sexual assault, Carpenter reported that McCall stated he would not answer questions without an attorney or more information.

"I asked him to clarify what he meant by more information, and he said he did not want to talk without an attorney present," Carpenter reported.

During the Friday arraignment McCall waived the right to a speedy trial and a date was set for March 21.

McCall is being held in Whitman County Jail on a $50,000 cash bail through Superior Court.
