Colfax hosts Liberty Lancers in dual meet
COLFAX - On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Colfax Bulldogs honored their senior wrestlers before squaring off against the Liberty Lancers in a dual meet on their home mat.
Seniors this year for the Bulldogs include Alton Burt wrestling in the 157-pound weight class, Dory Doty at 235, Dillon Gassenberg (138), Grace Jones (120) and Nick Meeuwsen of Garfield-Palouse at 165.
In the dual meet, Liberty defeated Colfax 30-17, with eight matches and six exhibition matchups.
Starting off at the 144-pound weight class, Liberty's Maxon Strobel defeated Colfax's Braxden Gransberry by fall at the 3:26 mark of the match.
Next up was an exhibition match between Colfax's Josiah Huber and Raymond Lasz of Liberty. Lasz won by fall in the match.
At 150 pounds, Aslan Burt (Colfax) took on Jett Marburger (Liberty). Marburger defeated Burt by fall in 1:37.
Next, Colfax's Alton Burt faced Liberty's Maddex Strobel at 157 pounds. Strobel won by fall in 2:58.
For the 165-pound weight class, Joel Burris of Colfax wrestled Thorne Tissue of Liberty. Tissue defeated Burris by fall in 1:42.
At 175-pounds Austin Campbell (Colfax) took on Joey Matherly (Liberty). Matherly won by fall over Campbell in 1:37.
Next was an exhibition friendly match between Doty and Colfax's Trinity Burd. Doty won by fall in the match.
In a 215-pound match, Isaac Nelson of Colfax defeated Coleman Green of Liberty by technical fall, 18-0 at the 5:27 mark of the match.
For a 113-pound match, Ty Scott (Colfax) defeated Liberty's Chance Degon by fall in 2:57.
An exhibition match between Colfax's Jones and Liberty's Hanna Perkins saw Jones win by fall.
A pair of exhibition matches came next with St. John's Cameron Mathia taking on Colfax's Cody Phillips and a friendly between Floyd McKernian and Adam Scott, both of Colfax. Phillips won by fall over Mathia and McKernian won by fall over Scott.
In the last official match of the night, at 138 pounds Gassenberg (Colfax) defeated Maxon Strobel (Liberty) by an 8-5 decision.
In the final match of the evening, Nick Meeuwsen (Garfield-Palouse) fell to Liberty's Thorne Tissue in an exhibition matchup.
The Colfax boys next traveled to Warden, Wash., for a dual on Saturday, Jan. 11. The next home meet for the Bulldogs will be to host the Southern 2B Championships on Saturday, Feb. 1.
The Bulldogs wrestling team took to the mats and placed sixth in team scores with 102 points for the Crusader Classic wrestling tournament.
Colfax's Cooper Phillips won first place in the 126-pound category, defeating Cody Andrea of Newport, Peyton Collins of Mount Spokane and Sage Nichols of Oroville to make it to the championship bout. Phillips defeated Deer Park's Elijah Wisman-Clough by fall in 3:35 to win first place.
Dillon Gassenberg took second place at the tournament in the 138-pound weight class, falling to Okanogan's Joseph Kruse by a 10-4 decision.
Ty Scott placed fourth at 113 pounds, just barely falling short of Liberty Launch Academy's Parker Bundy by a 5-4 decision.
Issac Nelson made it to the semifinals in the 215-pound division before falling to Okanogan's Austin Morgan by fall in 5:50 of the match.
Joel Burris (165) and Cody Phillips (132) each made it to the quarterfinals in their respective weight classes.
The next home wrestling meet for the Bulldogs will be to host the South League Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10:30 a.m.
