Colton basketball continues Southeast 1B League play
OAKESDALE — The Colton Wildcats continued League action with a pair of Southeast 1B matchups over the weekend.
The Wildcats took on the Oakesdale Nighthawks on Friday, Jan. 10 and played the Waitsburg Cardinals on Saturday, Jan. 11. Both were away games.
For the Colton boys, the Nighthawks defeated the Wildcats, 70-23, before the Wildcats beat the Cardinals, 54-50, For the girls, Oakesdale defeated Colton, 55-33, and the Wildcats beat the Cardinals, 64-27.
Boys games
Against Oakesdale, The Nighthawks gained a 17-point lead to end the first quarter and held a 36-6 advantage at halftime. Colton had its best quarter in the third, scoring 12 points before adding five in the fourth. The Nighthawks gained 21 in the third and 13 in the fourth for the win.
Colton senior Ryan Impson led the Wildcats with seven points, followed by sophomore Wyatt Baysinger with five. Junior Tanner Baerlocher and sophomore Ivan Michel each had four points with freshman Silan Nollmeyer contributing three on a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.
As a team, the Wildcats had 20 rebounds, eight steals and two assists.
The Wildcats went on to defeat the Cardinals the next night.
Rallying back from 11 points down at halftime, Colton mounted a major comeback in the second half to defeat Waitsburg.
At the end of the first quarter, the Cardinals led, 16-13, and steadily built its advantage in the second frame. At halftime, Waitsburg led, 27-16.
Impson, Nollmeyer and sophomore Hayden Purnell each hit 3-pointers in the third quarter with Baysinger adding six points on three field goals to make the comeback. Colton gained 23 points in the third frame while holding Waitsburg to 10.
With the Wildcats gaining 12 points in the fourth and the Cardinals adding 13, the Colton boys got their second win of the season.
Baysinger led the Wildcats with 14 points on five field goals and shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Baerlocher added 13 points on five field goals and three free throws. Impson contributed 10 points for the Wildcats.
Colton moved to 2-10 on the season, 2-8 in League play.
Girls games
Colton fell to the Oakesdale, 55-33, on Friday in Southeast 1B League action. Complete statistics were not available at press time.
The Wildcats licked their wounds and went on to defeat the Cardinals, 64-27, the next night.
Colton held Waitsburg to single digits in each quarter while the offense gained double digits in three of the four. The Wildcats gained a 15-5 advantage to end the opening frame and held a 42-13 lead at halftime. With Waitsburg scoring seven points in each of the final two quarters and Colton scoring 18 in the third, four in the fourth, the Wildcats got the victory.
Wildcats senior Ella Nollmeyer led her team with 20 points on 10 field goals and junior Rori Weber added 18 points, sinking six 3-pointers in the game. Junior Leah Musson contributed 12 points and senior Claire Moehrle scored nine.
Colton will return home for their next game with a matchup against the Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves on Friday, Jan. 17. The girls game will begin at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.
