Gar-Pal Vikings remain undefeated in League

Girls hold a 10-0 League record, boys are 11-0 in Southeast 1B

PALOUSE - Continuing League play, the Garfield-Palouse (Gar-Pal) Vikings boys and girls remain unbeaten in the conference with wins against the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse (SJEL) Eagles and Pomeroy Pirates last weekend.

On Friday, Jan. 17, the Gar-Pal girls defeated the Eagles with a staggering 98-17 victory before beating the Pirages, 75-52, Saturday, Jan. 18.

The Viking boys beat the Eagles, 80-36, before defeating the Pirates, 47-42.

Viking girls pillage opponents

The Garfield-Palouse girls handily defeated the SJEL Eagles, 98-17, on Friday night.

Gar-Pal scored more than 30 points in each of the first two quarters, added 21 points in the third and 10 points in the fourth while holding SJEL to just four points in each of the first two quarters, nine in the third and completely shut out SJEL in the fourth.

Thirteen Vikings players got on the board with junior Morgan Lentz leading the pack scoring 19 points on eight field goals. Freshman Molly Huffman added 14 points with sophomore Kyra Brantner and eighth grader Ellie Collier each scoring 11.

The Vikings girls went on to defeat Pomeroy on Saturday.

Gar-Pal steadily increased its lead, scoring 17 points in the first and 20 in the second quarters while Pomeroy scored 14 in each frame. At halftime, Gar-Pal led, 37-28.

With the Vikings scoring 18 points in the third and 20 in the fourth while holding the Pirates to 12 points in each of the final two quarters, Gar-Pal gained the League win.

Eight Vikings players put points on the board with junior Elena Flansburg scoring a team-high 35 points on 16 field goals, seven of them 3-pointers, and six free throws.

Brantner added nine points, Lentz scored eight and Huffman contributed seven.

Gar-Pal boys dominate

The Vikings continued their run of the Southeast 1B League with wins against SJEL on Friday and Pomeroy on Saturday.

Against SJEL, Gar-Pal took a commanding 24-11 lead to end the first quarter and built a 40-22 advantage at halftime. The Vikings continued to run the court with 16 points scored in the third and 25 in the fourth while holding the Eagles to 11 in the third and four in the fourth.

Ten Vikings players got on the board with junior Lane Collier leading the pack at 21 points on eight field goals and sinking four free throws. Junior Liam Cook added 18 points and senior Landon Orr contributed 14 points in the game.

Against Pomeroy on Saturday, the Vikings came away with a five-point victory.

Gar-Pal took a 10-8 lead to end the first quarter and held a 22-13 lead at halftime. Pomeroy attempted a comeback, scoring 17 points in the third and 12 in the fourth while the Vikings maintained 12 points in the third and 13 in the fourth. At the final buzzer, Gar-Pal emerged victorious with the five-point win.

Collier again led the Vikings with 19 points with senior Kieran Snekvik adding 12 and Cook scoring nine.

The Vikings next faced Northeast 1B opponent Almira-Coulee-Hartline Warriors on Tuesday, Jan. 21, after press time. The Vikings will next face the Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves on Friday, Jan. 24, with the girls game starting at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow at 7:30 p.m.
