The View From Here: Schaut's Market

GARFIELD — A belated “Happy Birthday!” to Schaut’s Market! On Halloween 2019, Connie and John Schaut purchased the Garfield business from its previous owner, Sonya Hall. Five years later, it remains a local “go-to” for a large variety of items.

Many people in town, especially seniors, rely on the market, located at 210 West California Street, for their grocery needs-and beyond.

As Connie explained, “You never know what you’re going to find!” Beyond its convenient location, customers appreciate its well-stocked shelves. They feature a wide variety of dairy, frozen and canned foods, fresh produce, bread products, candy, and sodas—and these are just the beginning. In addition, the store also carries health and beauty items, beer and wine, automotive supplies, and other “must-haves.”

There is even a bakery case featuring fresh sweets on Wednesdays and maple bars on Fridays.

More than a half-dozen vendor booths call Schaut’s Market “home.” Among their offerings are DVDs, decorator accents, clothing, craft materials, and kids’ toys.

The largest booth is Connie’s “Reading Gallery” with over 800 books, on a variety of topics. A nearby seating area includes two complete sets of classic encyclopedias—both Grolier and World Book—for those wishing to take trip down Memory Lane.

Schaut’s will host a Customer Appreciation Event on Saturday, December 14, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Vendor booth sales, free door prizes and refreshments will be available that day. In addition, Reading Gallery books will be 20% off. Regular store hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
